The Eastern Scheldt is a busy and economically very important shipping route with the status of main transport axis: approx. 45,000 vessels per year with a combined load of approx. 25 million tonnes.
Professional shipping mainly uses the route Krammersluizen - Wemeldinge, via Keeten and the central part of the Eastern Scheldt (Witte Tonnen Vlije, Brabantsch Vaarwater and Engelsche Vaarwater). It is a connection between the Rhine-Meuse system and the industrial areas near Vlissingen and in Zeeland and West Flanders.
The safety and environmental aspects are closely monitored, particularly by Rijkswaterstaat. The Wemeldinge traffic station plays an important role as it supervises the ships on the Eastern Scheldt.
