In the Eastern Scheldt area you will find many different plants and animals. The different biotopes of salt and freshwater, from deep to shallow water, from strong to weak currents and the presence of silts, salt marshes and artificial rocky coasts, have created many different ecosystems. Different plants and animals flourish in every small ecosystem.
Ensuring the conservation of natural areas and protecting them is a task for Europe, the government and the Province. There are 16 nature reserves in Zeeland, including the Eastern Scheldt, which form part of a European network of nature reserves where animal and plant species live that are important for biodiversity.
This network is called Natura 2000. The Geo counter of the Province of Zeeland shows maps displaying the Natura 2000 areas. There is also information about for example the designated peak locations and seal counts.
