National Park is an internationally recognised concept. Valuable natural areas and ecosystems are preserved, protected and developed all over the world by designating them as national parks.
The Dutch national parks have four objectives:
• Nature preservation and development
• Nature-oriented recreation
• Information and education
• Scientific research
All national parks are core areas of the National Ecological Network (EHS). This is the Dutch system of nature reserves, nature development areas and connecting zones as laid down in the Structure Plan for Rural Areas (SGR). National parks are central government focus areas.
