See and hear

Just off the coast at the head of the harbour of Zierikzee, you can regularly see porpoises swimming. A beautiful sight when you see their fins rise above the water.  Wouldn't it be nice if you could hear them too?

At the end of the pier, you will find a column incorporated with all kinds of technical equipment. The sounds that the porpoise make are captured using a hydrophone. This hydrophone can be found underneath a large buoy in front of the coast. From the buoy they are forwarded to the column. At the touch of a button you can hear the sounds of the animals.

It’s possible you only hear a buzz; this means there is no porpoise nearby. Find a nice spot to sit down and look over the water until you see one or come back again later.

Porpoises are regularly seen close to the shore of harbour. The breakwaters are a perfect viewpoint for this. With a little patience, you’ll be able to spot a fin just above the water. Maybe you’ll even hear the air escaping from the blowhole.

Nearby, next to the restaurant 't Oliegeultje, you will find the natural entrance point Burghsluis. Panels provide you with information about the surroundings and the activities. Part of the experience is a listening pole that lets you hear the sound of a porpoise and a seal.
